SUMMARY:In-Person March Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:** All Student Members please contact the registration chair. \n\nMarch Professional Education Seminar (PES)\nWhen: 3-6:30pm on Wednesday\, March 16th\, 2022 \nTopic: “Impacts of Climate Change and Urbanization on Future Building Performance” \nSpeaker: Drury B. Crawley\, Ph.D. \n	With the increasing interest in climate change driven by human activity\, recent research has focused on the impact of climate change or urban heat island on building operation and performance across the world. But this work usually aggregates the energy and peak demand impacts across a broad sector. In a recent study\, impacts on the operating performance of an office building were estimated based on climate change and heat island scenarios in 25 locations (20 climate regions). This presentation presents the variation and differences among the 20 regions when climate change is introduced. The focus is on changes in comfort conditions\, building equipment operation as well as daily patterns of energy performance using prototypical buildings that represent typical\, good\, and low-energy practices around the world. Other issues such as fuel swapping as heating and cooling ratios change\, impacts on environmental emissions\, and how low-energy building design incorporating renewables can significantly mitigate any potential climate variation are also presented. \n \n	Dru Crawley is Bentley Fellow and Director\, Building Performance Research focusing on building performance\, zero-energy Buildings\, decarbonization\, digital twins\, smart cities\, sustainability\, and resilience. Prior to being elevated to Bentley Fellow in 2014\, he led development of Bentley’s building performance software suite for four years. Before joining Bentley in 2010\, Dr. Crawley developed and managed EnergyPlus and the USDOE’s Commercial Buildings Initiative (now Better Buildings Initiative and Alliances) promoting creation of net-zero-energy buildings. \nWith more than 40 years of experience in buildings energy efficiency\, renewable energy\, and sustainability\, he has worked in engineering software development\, government research and standards development organizations\, as well as building design and consulting companies. He received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from University of Strathclyde in Glasgow\, Scotland on the topic of building simulation as a policy tool\, and a Bachelor of Architecture from University of Tennessee\, and is a registered architect. \nDr. Crawley is active in ASHRAE (Director-At-Large on ASHRAE Board\, member of Task Force on Building Decarbonization\, Chair of Standard 169 (Climatic Data for Building Design Standards)\, member of SSPC 189.1 (Standard for the Design of High-Performance\, Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings)\, as well as a member of Standards PC 105R\, 140\, 205R\, 209R\, 228P\, and 229P. His is a former member and Chair of Standards Committee as well a past member of the Technical Activities\, Research Administration\, Advocacy\, and Grassroots Government Activities Committees\, and past chair of Technical Committees 2.8\, 4.2\, 4.7\, and 7.1). He was elevated to ASHRAE Fellow in 2009 and achieved ASHRAE BEMP (Building Energy Modeling Professional) certification in October 2012\, and received the ASHRAE Exceptional Service Award (2013)\, Service to ASHRAE Research Award (2012)\, Distinguished Service Award (2003)\, and Symposium Best Paper Award (1999) for “Which Weather Data Should You Use for Energy Simulations of Commercial Buildings?” \nHe is also active in the International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA Vice President since 2018\, at-large board member since 1998\, Fellow in 2012\, Regional Affiliate Liaison since 2006)\, IBPSA-USA (IBPSA-USA board member since 2013\, President 2019-2021\, Vice President 2017-2019\, and Treasurer 2013-2017)\, U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC\, past vice chair and member\, Energy & Atmosphere Technical Advisory Group; past member\, Research Committee; past research Liaison)\, the American Institute of Architects (AIA)\, an Affiliate member of CIBSE\, and serves on the editorial boards of three international Journals. SUMMARY:December PES Webinar
DESCRIPTION:** All Student Members please contact the registration chair. \n\nDecember Professional Education Seminar (PES) Webinar\nWhen: Noon-2pm on Wednesday\, December 8th\, 2021\n	Topic 1: Integrity (How to Respond When Things Go Wrong)\nSpeaker 1: Terry Rogers\nIntegrity is often used to describe people and their traits. Some descriptions of integrity are exhibiting conduct that conforms to accepted standards of right and wrong\, remaining truthful even when it means taking responsibility for failures\, and being faithful to high moral standards. A prerequisite to integrity is to have established norms\, standards\, behaviors\, etc. that everyone agrees are generally appropriate and applicable to all situations. Integrity is also a term that can be used when describing physical assets\, processes\, structures\, and even organizations. \nWhen assessing a building or structure we evaluate the physical aspect of integrity. When attributing integrity to processes and organizations\, a different set of examples and characteristics come to mind. This presentation will discuss how the concept of integrity permeates the engineering\, design\, construction\, commissioning\, and long- term operations of facilities. Integrity is demonstrated by how we respond to\, and how we behave when we make mistakes or encounter the unexpected. \n \n	Terry has over 39 years of progressive experience in Critical Facilities operations and management including strategic planning\, critical infrastructure design\, operations\, and commissioning; business protection and recovery; preventive and predictive maintenance; technical training and professional training development. \nTerry is an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer and a voting member of ASHRAE TC9.9 “Mission Critical Facilities\, Data Centers\, Technology Spaces\, & Electronic Equipment“\, ASHRAE SSPC 90.4 “Energy Standard for Data Centers”\, as well as ASHRAE SPC-127 and GPC-1.6P. He is on the Board of Directors of the Building Commissioning Association’s Southeast Region and has authored or co-authored books\, whitepapers\, and presentations on Critical Facilities\, facilities management\, and formal commissioning. Terry is active with the Lawrence Livermore National Lab’s Energy Efficiency High Performance Computing Working Group and the 7×24 Exchange International and local Carolinas chapter. He has developed and taught multiple training classes in the design\, construction\, operation\, and maintenance of critical facilities including commercial nuclear power plants\, aerospace facilities\, and large data centers. \nTerry has performed site reliability assessments for more than 50 sites in over 20 countries across 5 continents. Terry writes a bi-monthly column in Mission Critical magazine called Sustainable Operations. \n	Topic 2: Pitfalls of Legal Activity for Design-build Engineers\nSpeaker 2: Tom Gilbertson\nThe life of an ASHRAE Member can take some funny turns. As design engineers\, we conduct our activity in a bit of a vacuum. But we can’t assume that everyone we work with has an understanding of\, and a vocabulary to match\, the activities that we do. This presentation will cover the importance of understanding the perspective of who you’re working with (e.g.\, developers\, architects\, contractors)\, discuss strategies to take when things go wrong\, and provide an overview of what can befall engineers in the legal system. \n \n	Thomas Gilbertson has more than five decades of experience as a mechanical engineer. Since 1981\, he has been the President of Thomas A. Gilbertson & Assoc. Inc. He joined ASHRAE in 1961\, became a Distinguished Member of ASHRAE in 2013\, and received the Distinguished Service Award in 2014 and 2015. He has served in more than a dozen roles for ASHRAE\, including as Chair on a Refrigeration Technical Committee. He holds patents for a water side economizer\, a pressurized ice building chilled water system\, and a refrigerant pump. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. \n	If you have attended any of our virtual meetings and still need a certificate\, please email Reception@nccashrae.org and request a survey link.  Your completed responses will qualify you to receive your certificate as a pdf via email.
