Professional Education Seminar (PES)
Environmental impacts of MEP systems: what we know? What we need? And what can we do?
Matt will present findings from a critical review of published studies that include MEP systems within building-scale life cycle assessments to discuss the importance of transparency, interpretability and comparability of published results. The presentation will outline 10 key areas of future research and academic-industry collaboration that aim to improve how MEP systems are included within building-scale reporting and support the decarbonization of MEP systems. Additionally, we will discuss findings from completed case studies that have been conducted in collaboration with members of the Industry Advisory Board for CBE.
Matt Roberts, PhD - Assistant Professional Researcher, CBE
Matt Roberts is an Assistant Professional Researcher at the Center for the Built Environment at UC Berkeley where he leads the life cycle assessment (LCA) and embodied carbon research program.
Matt’s research focuses on the advancement of LCA methodology and applications to support cross-sectoral decarbonization across the built environment and affiliated industries. His current research includes the use of consequential LCA to assess changes in environmental impacts that result from implementing impact reduction strategies at scale; improving the completeness and comparability of building-scale assessments by evaluating the environmental impacts of MEP systems and sitework; and the development of education resources to support the uptake and use of LCA in practice. Matt received his PhD in Architecture and Civil Engineering from the University of Bath, UK.
