Thermal Energy Storage Systems
Thermal energy storage (TES) systems—often called thermal batteries—are emerging as a critical solution for managing grid demand, decarbonizing buildings, and enabling all-electric heating and cooling. This session will explore how the Inflation Reduction Act and the new One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) have expanded eligibility for federal tax credits under Section 48E to include TES technologies, offering incentives of up to 50% for qualifying projects. We will discuss how these credits, combined with other programs like 179D and Direct Pay, are driving adoption across commercial, institutional, and district-scale applications. Real-world case studies—including electrified retrofits and mixed-use developments—demonstrate how TES can reduce emissions, enhance grid flexibility, and deliver strong financial returns while meeting sustainability mandates.
