Use of Natural Refrigerant in Our Industry

The pending release of EPA’s new regulation mandating the phasedown of HFC refrigerants, which is scheduled to be issued October 1st, is a major factor supporting the expanded use of “Natural Refrigerants” in several refrigeration markets. The use of Ammonia, CO2 and Hydrocarbons is showing up in supermarkets, refrigerators, industrial air-conditioning systems, and are also greatly expanding in many industrial refrigeration applications such as cold storage, food processing, dairies, wineries and ice rinks. The presentation will highlight these natural refrigeration trends and the new technologies that are making it happen.

Kurt Liebendorfer, Evapco

Kurt Liebendorfer is Vice President at Evapco in Taneytown, MD. He is leading the development and rapidly growing implementation of the new EvapCold family of products, which are complete Packaged Low Charge Ammonia Refrigeration Systems that are revolutionizing the industrial refrigeration market.

Kurt has been in the industrial refrigeration, process cooling and construction industry for 38 years and has also worked for JCI/Frick, Stellar, Haskell and GEA/FES.

Kurt received an MBA at Jacksonville University and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh.

Kurt has served on the Board, President and Chair of several organizations, Including Past-President of Jacksonville Chapter of ASHRAE. Over the last few years, he has devoted his time serving on several committees with the Global Cold Chain Alliance, Controlled Environmental Building Association, and the International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration. Kurt is currently serving on the Board of Directors of both CEBA and IIAR.

The discussion of this presentation will focus on the historical & current policies related to refrigerants in the HVAC industry, followed by an overview of some of the most popular alternatives being proposed to replace currently used refrigerants.

Alex Albrecht, Daikin Applied

Alex Albrecht has been with Daikin Applied for 6 years, supporting chiller sales markets, including export and domestic Applications, and Product Management. He holds a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech, and an MBA from the College of William and Mary. Since joining Daikin Applied, he has travelled extensively throughout the US and Canada, presenting on the dynamic and complex changing policies and trends related to refrigerants.
