Sustainability Considerations in a Data Center
Data Centers are mission critical facilities where uptime & risk management are the primary focus. Sustainability, including a detailed analysis of efficiency, design power consumption, embedded carbon, GWP, WUE, Noise & future-proof designs, is also critical. The swift expansion of multi-story data centers and dense rack configurations intensify the heat island phenomenon. When these trends intersect with prominent markets and their associated high ambient temperatures, they present reliability issues for data centers. Having a dynamic chilled water setpoint and a variable cold aisle temperature optimizes energy use and enables right-sizing of HVAC equipment. A detailed review of thermal design considerations and limited excursions outside of recommended / allowable ranges can guide optimal design and sequence of operations for the most sustainable data centers.
