Professional Education Seminar (PES)
Clearing the Air: A Comprehensive Exploration of What’s New in the World of ASHRAE and the Landscape of Filtration, Indoor Air Quality, and Decarbonization
This presentation aims to provide a high-level examination of ASHRAE standards and guidelines and the latest revisions, releases, and developments. Key ASHRAE advancements will be spotlighted, providing insights into how these standards and guidelines will contribute to shaping advanced strategies for filtration, indoor air quality and decarbonization.
This presentation will delve into topics including:
The approval and release of ASHRAE Standard 241 “Control of Infectious Aerosols” and the introduction of new concepts such as Equivalent Clean Airflow Rate, a novel approach that considers the cumulative impact of outdoor airflow, indoor air filtration, and air disinfection technologies.
Background and key aspects of ASHRAE Guideline 44P “Protecting Building Occupants from Smoke During Wildfire and Prescribed Burn Events” covering proposed recommendations for building measures related to the design, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of building envelope, ventilation, and air cleaning systems.
Notable changes to ASHRAE Standard 170 “Ventilation of Health Care Facilities” highlighting ventilation system design and updated language to filtration placement and MERV rating requirements.
Notable changes to ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2022 “Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality” including the addition of defined design contaminants for use in the mass balance equations for easier application of the Indoor Air Quality Procedure.
The development of new test method standards such as Standard 185.5P “Method of Testing HVAC-duct mounted Devices and Systems and In-Room devices for Particle and Microorganism Removal or Inactivation in a Chamber with a Recirculating Duct System” Standard 145.4P “Method of Test for Assessing the Gas-Phase Performance of Air Cleaning Devices and Systems in a Duct-Chamber Apparatus” and their anticipated use in ASHRAE standards to promote proper use and implementation of air cleaning technologies.
Joshua Howell - CAFS, Dynamic Air Quality Solutions
Joshua Howell is a Certified Air Filtration Specialist (CAFS) with Dynamic Air Quality Solutions where he collaborates with owners, architects, engineers and design teams on matters involving IAQ, energy savings, maintenance, sustainability and facilities management solutions. In this role Josh has provided analysis for particulate and contaminant control on a wide variety of projects within key market segment that include healthcare, government, higher education and museums. Josh is a graduate of the U.S Naval Academy and has completed post graduate studies at the Project Management Institute and Syracuse University.
Caitlin Naske - Lead Chemical Engineer, Dynamic Air Quality Solutions
Caitlin Naske is the Lead Chemical Engineer at Dynamic Air Quality Solutions. With over 12 years of experience in air quality, activated carbon and adsorption, Caitlin provides expertise in gas phase and particulate contaminants and methods for improving indoor air quality.
Prior to working for Dynamic, Caitlin worked for Ingevity (formally known as MeadWestVaco, MWV), an activated carbon manufacturer, where she worked in product development for air purification and corrosion prevention. During her tenure she was involved in reformulating activated carbon products and extensive application testing including designing accelerated and long term product validation testing. Caitlin then brought her expertise to Dynamic applying it to improving indoor air quality through applications design and testing and product development and validation.
Caitlin is the committee Chair of the new ASHRAE standard 145.4P “Method of Test for Assessing the Gas-Phase Performance of Air Cleaning Devices and Systems in a Duct-Chamber Apparatus”. She is also actively involved in ASHRAE committees including SSPC 145, TC 2.3, and TR4-IAQP.
