New Insights Into Space Heating Hot Water Systems in Commercial Buildings
Space heating hot water systems are typically the largest generator of both site- and source- carbon emissions in existing commercial buildings in the US. Better understanding these systems is crucial to decarbonizing the built environment as cost effectively and quickly as possible. This presentation will share findings from a recently completed 4 year long research and demonstration project funded by the California Energy Commission that focused on these systems. The results include a demonstration of in-depth efficiency measures that reduced annual natural gas use by 70% in two existing large office buildings in the San Francisco Bay Area, distribution heat losses measured in seven buildings, an analysis of hydronic heating system data from hundreds of buildings nationwide, and more.

Paul Raftery is a Professional Researcher at the Center for the Built Environment at UC Berkeley. He has a PhD in Engineering from University of Galway, Ireland for developing a new method for calibrating building energy models to detailed measured data, and a Bachelor's of Mechanical Engineering from Munster Technical University. Paul has 20 years of hands-on experience in HVAC engineering, building automation systems and controls, full-scale laboratory and field testing of HVAC equipment, and new technology development. He is a Fulbright Fellow and an active member of ASHRAE as the past chair of ASHRAE TC 6.5 (Radiant heating and cooling) and current voting member of ASHRAE Guideline 36 (High performance control sequences). He has served as a Principal Investigator on several large, multi-year research projects on topics such as commercial building controls, hydronic heating systems, heat pumps, radiant systems and ceiling fans funded by the California Energy Commission and the Department of Energy.
